I've just picked up a collector's edition box set of Age of Empires 1 and 2, with expansions, and I'm looking for some people to play with :D

So far I've played with Mike and Vicious, and firmly whipped both their asses with my sneaky special tactic. If anyone else plays, I'd love to get a 3 or 4 player game going sometime! :D

I have no comment as to the "Forest Sneak Attack" strategy previously mentioned.

It's pretty simple actually - don't be lazy and use forests as natural walls :P

When i get my new computer ( which should be very soon... in a week or two ) i will pick up a copy and play with you, so you can beat my ······.

Word of advice when playing against Tom...

Tom gets into role play, and as such, will slave away for an hour working along side you, all the while setting up an elaborate and completely unforeseen betrayal. You cannot win, and you cannot recover, all you can do is stall your defeat by building small structures randomly across the map as your main base is falling to rubble and ash at the hands of his massive armies... Further more... If there's a population limit of (just for an example) 200, prepare to be swarmed with about 100 units, all the while knowing that there are two teams of 50 units each waiting to pounch on your base from different directions... Unless he assumes the defensive role, at which point you may as well move your computer to the kitchen because you'll be there for a few days. (And in truth, you stand better chances at breaking into Fort Knoxx than you do of getting through Tom's city walls and surviving for more than 30 seconds.)

In the sense that he enjoys betraying people in strategy games he sounds like me, except that i suck infinitly at strategy games that aren't civilization.

BTW, i have a favour to ask of you Vicious...

Tom
12-29-2009, 05:24 PM
I'd crush you at Civilization games, too ^^

Mike

Not I.

Tom

No Mike, not you.

Mike

Vicious has told me about Age of Empires, and I want to play too! I love RTS games. I'm actually in the middle of...procuring...Battle for middle Earth 2 right now, but after that then Age of Empires is next. Should I go for the first or the second one?

Mike
12-29-2009, 06:16 PM
I think you should procure the second one, and provide SAUCE.

Tom
12-29-2009, 06:21 PM
We'll mainly be playing the second one, but get the boxed set from Amazon for less than ten of your American dollars, and you can have both :) I know these games are very easy to obtain via the internet, but you can't mod a pirated version. So, if everyone gets the retail version we'll be able to play with the unlimited population mod ^^

Oh, and we'll need someone to host the game.

Davy, if someone buys my Steam account I shall get you the boxed set.

Boxofit

I can mod ANYTHING. I would make my own unlimited population mod before going with Steam. Actually I can't mod the Freedom Fighter's pc game, but that's why I learned to make codebreaker/gameshark codes for PC games. Thanks for the offer of the box set though.

Your last three sentences were totally unrelated to each other and have confused me.

Yeah, I was doing some research on the stuff, and then realised I was researching Half-Life 2, so I needed to cover my ignorance pretty quickly. I was hoping noone saw.

I was hoping I could have found a digital download somewhere, but to no avail.

I can't wait to play Age of empires with you guys, so i can get my ······ kicked. :D

But before i do that, i need a computer, and before i go off and spend all my hard earned money on a computer i need to speak with people who acctualy know something about computers.

Anyone willing to help me wit' duh puter?

Tom
12-29-2009, 07:57 PM
How much money do you have to spend on a putah?

ArthurDent
12-29-2009, 10:25 PM
Let's see... I have about 500 right now, but i'm probably going to have 700-800 dollars by this next week.

If you were near Florida, I could build you an AWESOME system for that price... (I'm talking 6GB RAM, 3.6 Ghz Processing Power, 1 TB Hard Drive space, and an nVidia GeForce 9800 GX2 for true gaming power) But unfortunately, you'll probably go to the store and buy an HP with 2GB of RAM and only 350 GB of Hard Drive space, all because you're too far away to take advantage of my awesome prices.

It's really almost enough to make me cry.

I'm assuming a Dell store will be the best to buy the computer?
Also, is there a straightfoward way of telling how good a graphics card is? All i know about them is that the ATI 4600 and 4800 are great, and the old Nividias aren't too shaby either. But seeing as i want something newer than a Niv, and the ATIs are out of my price range, how do i tell if the graphics card i'm getting is beast or complete rubish?

EDIT: I'm assuming the shiping on a computer from Florida to Minnesota would cost a good hundred bucks?

Vicious88
12-30-2009, 02:51 AM
Anything nVidia GeForce 8600 or better is pretty much a beast.

ArthurDent
12-30-2009, 03:00 AM
1 - How much are those graphics cards?
2 - By "higher" do you mean "number above 8600"?
3 - I'm assuming that that means NO there isn't a standard way to tell if a graphics card is good regrdless of brand?

Mike
12-30-2009, 03:52 AM
Sweet, I'm have a beast Graphics card.

Vicious saved me a big chunk of money. :D

I will have windows again in about 2 weeks.

The way I see it, if Vicious built you that computer and you both drove to Illinois, you'd be able to make the exchange. Then drive back. I'd go to that length to buy an awesome computer.

ArthurDent
12-30-2009, 07:44 PM
Yeah, well, i don't know if Vicious would go to that length to get a me a computer.

Sure he'll answer computer questions to a mentaly retarded me for two hours while he's playing WoW, but i don't think he'd really like to drive to illinois. Plus... i think i'm getting something good as it is.

Vicious88
12-30-2009, 08:06 PM
Driving to Illinois is out of the question... My car wouldn't survive that...

ArthurDent
12-30-2009, 09:04 PM
Yeah, and my bike wouldn't do too well either.

Boxofit
12-31-2009, 06:27 AM
I could walk over there, but not only would it take a while, but I can't guarantee the computer would survive the trip, so all in all it's not worth it unless you'd enjoy my company more than an awesome computer, which frankly, I'd rather have the computer.

Just had two games with Mike... Battle reports:

GAME #1 - Tom vs Mike vs AI (Free For All)

I started off sandwiched between Mike and the AI player. Throughout the development of my town I had to fend off constant raids from the AI player and this prevented me from building up proper defences, which allowed Mike to destroy everything with his battering rams when he attacked. I spent the entire game stealing the entire supply of stone from across the map. Game lasted three hours, more or less.

Result: Mike wins

GAME #2 - Tom vs Mike vs AI (Free For All)

I found my own, nice little corner this time, and started off there. Mike started next to the AI this time but rushed it and the AI player surrended about five minutes into gameplay. I had a much easier time building up my defences. Later on, Mike sent his rams at my walls like last time, but I sent out the cavalry to destroy them and when his troops arrived they found the walls unbreached and were promptly slaughtered by my hordes of archers. This was repeated several times, then Mike decided on a different tactic - pound my walls from long range with trebuchets, and guard them with a huge army to prevent my cavalry getting at them. I admit I kinda cheated at this point and exploited the very bad AI - I sent one troop at his army and then ran off, so his entire army followed and left the trebuchets open for my cavalry to destroy. A couple of waves of trebuchets depleted the last of his resources leaving my army free to counter-attack and assault his town, but I failed due to his mega defenses. Since neither of us could really be bothered to continue, we called a stalemate. It was a four hour game.

Result: Stalemate

Defense is my specialty in RTSs. I normally can't be bothered attacking.

Boxofit
01-18-2010, 04:12 PM
Tom: I don't think it's cheating to exploit the AI, I do it myself in C&C Generals all of the time, and am learning to do it in The Battle for Middle Earth 2.

Mike:It sucks you're forced to take the aggressive stance, I have to do that whenever I play RTS games against James because the last thing I'm going to do is give him time to work out a strategy.
