Right, I'm getting a kick-······ computer.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Motherboard: Asus M4A87TD USB3
RAM:4GB Corsair DDR3 1600mhz DHX CL9 (2x 2GB)
Hard Drive: 500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s
Optical Drive: 22x DVD±RW DL SATA
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1,280MB
Sound Card: Onboard 7.1 Audio
Case: Piano Black ATX
PSU: 700W EZCool Tornado

I've specced this out and it can play any game currently on the market, on maximum settings. With that in mind, I can now play any PC game in the world, so please make me some suggestions!

Age of Empires III ... Currently this is Davy's pet project.
Oregon Trail for DOS ... Only suggested because Windows 7 particularly hates DOSBox.
Grand Theft Auto IV ... You'd be alone in the beginning, as neither Davy nor I currently have computers awesome enough to play this game well online -- but I think you'll find that it's still fun as is, and once we can all play it on PC -- PWNage will ensue.
Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Because it's good to know how, just in case you ever have to.

Emulator Classics: (You're going to want a USB gamepad of some kind. I personally use a USB adaptor that lets me plug in my Playstation 2 controllers (for maximum pwn).

Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time (N64): Oh my god... Oh my god... Oh my god... I still think this may have been one of the best games ever made, if not the best. Long game play, free world atmosphere, memorable characters, lots of extras, treasures, and unlockables, minigames, challenges, graphics which are still pleasing even to today's jaded eyes, and just all around fun.

GoldenEye 007 (N64): For multiplay, this couldn't be beat. It was simply awesome, and revolutionary for it's time. But since net-playing emulators is rather tricky and laggy at best, you'll probably want to play through the story mode. While the graphics of this may have your trying desperately not to notice their hands - it's still a classic and still AWESOME.

007 The World Is Not Enough (or TWINE) (N64): The single player for this game was amazing, and if you make it past the submarine level on your first try, you're amazing too. This one brought in a whole new world of stealth aspects to the series, making it to where, you had more options than simply using a silenced weapon and B.A. gun slinging skills to get through level to level.

Animal Crossing (GameCube): You're going to have a hard time finding a good emulator which will run this one properly. This game is HEAVILY dependent on the game cube's internal BIOS to keep track of the time and date, and most of the emulator BIOSs, for some idiotic reason, don't reference your computer's time and date to get their information. But if you can get this working.. Once you're past the childish graphics and the cartoony way in which the game is presented, I PROMISE you this will consume all of your spare time for at least a month, and again come special holidays (like Christmas). --- I bought a gamecube SPECIFICALLY for this game, lol. So I know what I'm talking about.

Harvest Moon (64): If you've ever wasted a day of your life playing FarmVille, FarmTown, Farmer'sCoop, FarmPlanet, FarmAssylum, or any of that other Facebook Farming crap -- then you've wasted a day of your life... But play Harvest Moon, and what seems to be the same basic principle opens up into a whole "Slice of Life" (Popular Japanese Genre) in which you get to steadily learn your character, their past, and impact the lives and choices of the other characters in town. I've played this game countless times, and each time is different than the time before it. (Also, since you'll be on an emulator, you can feel free to be cheap and use Save State before going to bed, in case there is suprise bad weather when you awake and you realize that you left something (or someone!) out in it.)

Jak I, II, and/or III (PS2): Alright, so let me start by saying that I'm not the world's biggest fan of the Jak and Daxter series. But this was a fun one to watch evolve over time. It actually grew with it's target audience, and I'd much rather see Naughty Dog produce another Jak title, than keep throwing away time on the Uncharted games. The original Jak & Daxter (Jak I), was a game aimed at children, and you can see that. It's bright, colorful, cartoony, and has lots of humor which borders on the cliche spun in to the point where you don't know for sure if you're watching a cutscene or a cliche sitcom, before you can get back to your classic platformer goodness. But with Jak II and III, the series takes a darker, more sinister, and more mature turn. The humor quickly becomes more... 'Adult Oriented', without completely stranding it's younger audiences. Atop that, the game play can actually be, at times, rather challenging. With these later games, you'll do it all: Weild a Ratchet'n'Clank sized Arsenal of weapons, do the right thing, do the wrong thing, get bored and kill innocent civilians, steal vehilces (and in Jak III, we're talking about some pretty cool ones too), run from authority, participate in races, take part in time and kill challenges, and OH SO MANY EXPLOSIONS. All while stirring in the standard Naughty Dog pinches of Platformery goodness and attempts at humor so you take the game less seriously than you otherwise might. Now you might notice here, that I'm not reccommending you step out into the other Jak Titles like "Daxter", "Jak X, Combat Racing" and "The Lost Frontier." -- well, my reasoning for that is rather simple... While I enjoyed the gameplay of Jak X, the plots to both Jak X and Daxter, to me, seemed a bit like Fan Fiction -- although my resident Jak Expert, assures me that the "Daxter" PERFECTLY explains what happened between Jak II and Jak III. As for Lost Frontier, it was MAINLY a PSP release, and neither Rita nor I have really invested any time into obtaining it -- although I hear that it got good reviews.

Last, and most epicly: Shenmue (Sega Dreamcast)
You will most likely not be able to emulate this game well enough to fully appreciate it. The emulators run Shenmue slowly, botch the dialog, and completely remove many of the various side aspects that made this game so amazing. But I assure you if you search around and get a Sega Dreamcast somewhere for $30 or $40 -- you'll easily get that money back in the form of pure and blissful joy (because even an unmodded Sega Dreamcast will play burned games :P). I've spoken my peace about the amazingness that is Shenmue too many times to give you 10k words about it now -- but trust me when I say that this game was the first of its kind, and it revolutionized the world of modern gaming.

Other good titles that I won't go into discussion on:

Super Mario All Stars (SNES)
Star Fox 64 (N64)
Resident Evil II (N64)
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64) (You'll pull your hair out on this one, I promise you).
Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (Gamecube, or if you're awesome enough to Bluetooth a WiiMote to your PC, Wii)
Top Gun (NES)
Jet Grind Radio (Sega Dreamcast)
Shenmue II (Sega Dreamcast / Xbox (xbox supports English Dialog a little better))
Super Metroid (SNES)

(((Sorry I don't have as extensive of list of modern games as I do emulator ones -- I just like 'mah ole school.)))

Mike, think you can handle FIFA on the PC? If so, 2010 World Cup?

Mike
09-27-2010, 01:36 PM
The computer is no longer primary game medium. GTA IV and FIFA 10 exist on PS3.

Tom
09-27-2010, 02:07 PM
The difference being that PC gaming can be free for both of us, whereas PS3 gaming will cost me at least 500 GBP (800 USD).

Mike
09-27-2010, 02:20 PM
Yea, but I already have GTA IV for PS3 and I know that FIFA will play weird on PC.

Vicious88

I have to agree as well that currently my PC is no longer my primary gaming method -- but that's simply because it's a geriatric piece of crap with a dieing motherboard which almost ALWAYS randomly keels over during gameplay.

But as soon as I can get me a good Motherboard with an AM3 socket, a few GB of RAM, and hopefully a nice six core processor for that bad boy -- I'll be back in business. And by "business" I most likely mean Crysis, since I really want to see what that game's all about.... Though I'd also like to check out Just Cause... *sigh* I wish I wasn't chronically broke :/

Anyway, Tom: The PS3 is 300 USD here... If I were you, I'd much rather order that thing from walmart.com or someplace and have it shipped to the UK than EVER consider paying 800 USD for one.

FIFA will not play weird, buy a controller for your computer, or if you have a PS2 then buy a PS2 controller USB adapter, and use your ps2 controller $6 for an adapter doesn't seem too bad after you consider how much you're spending on your computer.

The PC I just ordered will play Crysis on max specs at a comfortable 30fps :)

And as for the PS3, It's not just the console that makes that price James, I'd also have to get an adequate TV, plus games... Then I'd have to get a wall mount because there's no more space on my bedroom floor to put such a set-up...

With better variety, modding and upgrade capabilities, and a whole bunch more, it's much better value for me both in the short and long term to build a high-end PC than it is to have a console.

Problem: Gaming computer is currently fried, with no ETA to its revival, and dont want to spend money to buy USB adapter that costs money, when I have USB standard Dualshock 3 controllers that just hate every computer but the above fried computer.

PS3 IS the new dominant gaming platform until real games come to Android faster. There is very little that will change this situation in the next 6 months.

Mike, I'm terribly sorry about your gaming computer. I didn't know, but I can tell you that I understand the loss, and I agree Ps3 is the dominant gaming console, but I always have fun making mods for games and stuff, so I stick with PC.

TOM! Don't leave us! Play multiplayer with me! (and maybe Mike... But only every once in a while)

You'l love playing Civ 5 with me! I bought it, and it's super mega awesome! Even if naval troops are now useless and you can't take over an enemy city with culture any more! It's so awesome Tom! Sooooo awesome! There are no more stacks of doom, so the battles are about being smart instead of having the most troops! Buy Civ 5 Tom! Play it with me! Play as Ghandi and try to win through world domination! It would be so ironic, Tom! Do it! Buy it! Join us!

Mike

WHAT. No more culture flipping, and no more strength in numbers? I am concerned as to this game's worthiness.

ArthurDent
09-29-2010, 10:38 PM
Numbers are still the most important thing when it comes to any kind of battle, but terrain plays a bigger role than it did in previous civ games. The biggest change is the fact that there are no more "stacks of doom". Only one unit is allowed in a tile, so the way you position your troops makes a huge difference too... The number of troops will ultimately decide who wins, but if you're a complete dumbass with your troops (like most civ players are) your forces can be ambushed or forced into a place where they're at a disadvantage and a smaller army CAN emerge the victor. So you need to scout the area you're attacking first, and go in with a strategy... Once you know the terrain, and know your enemy the number of troop is all that matters... The core Civ gameplay is there, it's just that now, you can be like, "SPARTANS! TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL!" and keep a huge chunk of the Persian army busy while your boats run off to Salamis.

As for no culture flipping... well... I'm ****ed off too Mike.

I may soon end up with my dream job... And while the starting pay is meager, it would allow me to save up over the course of three months and build my dream super computer...

16 GB of Corsair DDR3 RAM, 4TB worth of RAID 0 HDD, top of the line video card (too many numbers for me to write accurately from memory, but Davy can vouch for me, it's EPIC), 6 Core AM3 processor (each running 3.2GHz, for a total of almost 20GHz of processing godliness), state of the art power supply, and more gaming power than I should have need of for the forth coming decade.

Total cost: $1,700.
Ridiculous: Yes.
Awesome: Very.
Worth it as a celebratory award for landing a good job with decent pay: I think so.

And when that time comes, I'll likely Dedicate one of those two 2TB HDDs specifically to gaming.

ArthurDent

What job did you "land" exactly?

And good luck with the super computer! Soon you will join us! AHAHAHAHA!

You're ****ing with me. You got a job at RockStar?

Vicious88
09-30-2010, 09:46 PM
What?! No! God no! They wouldn't hire me, I have a moral code. I was responding to "You know what game doesn't suck ······ that I want you to buy and play with me? I'll give you a wild guess."

That was my wild guess.

No...

The job is a three part split between Front Desk Rep (phones, appointments, schedules, customers), Data Clerk (Quicken, payroll, taxes, profit & loss, etc), and Site Tech (creating and maintaining DB, creating and cataloging strategic backups, keeping mobile devices synced with the office server, upgrading PCs where necessary, keeping up with the business website, etc). But it all summarizes down to "running the business side" so I can keep my two bosses active and employeed. They will handle their major contractors who they do the bulk of their business with, as well as all the actual labor (moving units, dispatches, etc). I will simply be the voice which greets new customers over the phone, calls customers if we've not received a payment, and keeps a watchful eye over the figures/schedules, so the business can make more money. ---- The business itself is like P.O.D.S. but more oriented towards a small town feel (which is perfect for our area's demographic of older generation people who would much rather come in and shake a hand then punch numbers over the phone or internet and deal with an automation). They do the manual work, I simply arrange, schedule, and bill that work (and if I can do all that while making sure that the necessary tech is working as it should: all the better).

Sounds great... and clean... much cleaner than mine, which soon i will be covered in engine oil and battery acid and other stuff that i might or might not be able to describe. Although right now i am stuck greeting customers for oil changes and tire work.

James, i hope you get this job, it is really awesome from how you've described it... although i don't think i could deal with a desk job like that, computer work and repair i don't mind as long as i'm able to wear comfortable clothes and i have all the necessary equipment to do the job.
